L e 7 April 2001, NASA launched the Mars Odyssey, for mineralogical mapping the Red Planet, check for the presence of water and measure radiation hitting the planet.

Regarding the presence of water, the evaluation reported to us today to suggest that water is not necessarily at great depths, but in places only 2 meters below the Martian soil. In August, NASA will send its first Mars Scout Mission: "Phoenix".

The lander has an arm drilling will analyze ice subsurface of Mars in search of signs of life.
The trend is now among commentators to say that because of the presence of water, it is unlikely that there discovered no traces of life.
